First Book Report: Historical Fiction

DUE NOV. 25, 2013
Book Report Ideas
Theme: Historical Fiction
Definition: A fictional story with real and invented characters that takes place during a historical time.
Directions: Choose a book that fits the category of historical fiction and have Mrs. McLaughlin approve it (otherwise you’ll lose points). Write a summary of the book and then choose one of the activities below to present to your classmates.
  1. After reading a book of history or historical fiction, make an illustrated timeline showing events of the story and draw a map showing the location(s) where the story took place.

  1. Construct puppets and present a show of one or more interesting parts of the book.

  1. Dress as one of the characters and act out a characterization (talk about your character as if you ARE the character).

  1. Imagine that you are the author of the book you have just read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a movie producer trying to get that person interested in making your book into a movie. Explain why the story, characters, conflicts, etc., would make a good film. Suggest a filming location and the actors to play the various roles. YOU MAY ONLY USE BOOKS WHICH HAVE NOT ALREADY BEEN MADE INTO MOVIES.

  1. Write a book review as it would be done for a newspaper. (Be sure you read a few book reviews before writing your own.)

Notes, Memory & Spelling: Oct. 28 - Nov. 1

Notes:

  • New Student: We welcomed a new student into our fourth grade class this past week. We are so happy to have Alyssa joining us!
  • Students sing in church: Students in grades K-8 have been practicing some songs in Music class that they will share on Sunday, October 27th, at the 10:30 AM service here at Saint Paul's Church.  Students are not required to come, but they are all encouraged to share with Saint Paul's Church their talents.  Saint Paul's members love to see how our school reaches and teaches so many students and families!
  • "Catching Compliments": At the beginning of each school year, my 3rd & 4th graders keep track of compliments received for things like walking quietly through the halls, displaying positive behavior, helping others, etc. After each 25th compliment is received, the class is rewarded in some way. Today we watched Stuart Little as we have just finished reading the novel by E.B. White. We discussed differences between the book and the movie and shared our reasons for which one we liked best.
  • Box Tops: Our class is in 1st place so far for the month of October...turn in your sheets and collections by next Friday, October 25, for this month's contest.  Our school hasn't met the goal yet, so look ask your family and friends to help!
  • Scholastic Book Order: A new book order went home today.  You'll find lots of great gifts for your readers! Send me an email if you order online.
