Pictures from National Lutheran Schools Week

On Wild Wednesday of National Lutheran Schools Week, the third and fourth grade students conducted a science experiment that they had started on their own over the weekend. Each student was to collect his/her own personal trash in a bag for the entire day and then bring it to school on Wednesday. We sorted through trash (Ewww!) and categorized our items into "Did Not Need to Use", "Recyclable/Reusable", "Cannot Reuse/Recycle." Then the students came up with ways they can better conserve their resources and not 

create so much trash. Surprisingly, they actually enjoyed themselves! Later on in the day, students got a surprise when "Teacher Switch" occurred and they had a new teacher every 15 minutes. Such fun!

On Fictional Friday, the students had the opportunity to dress up like a fictional book or movie character. Jack won from our class with his costume of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs!

Book Report Ideas

Theme: Non-fiction

Definition: All of the information is based on true facts (not made up).

Directions: Choose a book that fits the category of Non-fiction and have Mrs. McLaughlin approve it (otherwise you’ll lose points). You don't have to do the usual book report summary page with the activity this time.

1.     Only one choice this time:

Create a newspaper for your book. Use a real newspaper as your guide. You must have a front page, 2 inside pages, and a back page to your newspaper.

You’ll need to:

1.     FRONT PAGE:

a.      Create a name for your newspaper (example: The McLaughlin Morning Star)

b.     Write your cover story (the lead story) to summarize the book.

c.      Include a table of contents telling us on which page your news stories can be found.

2.     INSIDE PAGES:

a.      Cover the weather or “this day in history” or a different topic in another article. Include a picture.

b.     Do a feature story on one of the more interesting characters, places, or things. Maybe include an interview or picture?

c.      Include a letter to the editor that goes along with your story.

3.     BACK PAGE:

a.      Include a comic strip, a list of made-up movies playing at the theater, a wedding announcement, or an obituary that goes along with your story.

b.     Include a collection of at least three advertisements that would go along with the story. Use pictures in all your articles to help fill your paper.

"Dress Your Best" Day (Tuesday of National Lutheran Schools Week)

• "Goodies with GRANDS (Grandparents, Relatives, Aunts & uncles, Neighbors, Devoted caretakers, and Special friends)" 9:00-10:30AM. Each class will provide a bit of entertainment and enjoy a light breakfast with their loved one. Scholastic Book Fair will be open.
• Our class is doing a rap about Guideon for the class entertainment:) The kids want to wear sunglasses, ball caps, jackets, etc., during their rap. They are welcome to bring all of these accessories and then we'll remove them after the rap. Thanks!
• Family Night: St. Louis Science Center will give two half hour presentations to all preschool-grade 8 families- 6:00PM in the gym. 
• Presentation #1: "It's a Blast!" A chemistry show that explores a very specific type of exothermic reaction- Fire! Through surprising experiments, discover the basic needs of fire and witness some loud, bright, and colorful demonstrations that are sure to spark excitement!
• Presentation #2: "Creepy Chemistry!" This series of spooky experiments will definitely get "Oooohs!" and "Ahhhhs!" We'll explore a variety of chemistry experiments including fun with fire, expanding lunch bags, and rapid decomposition. We'll end it all with a bang! 
• Dairy Queen treats will be served during the short intermission between the two presentations.
• Scholastic Book Fair will be open from 5:15-5:45PM and for a bit after the presentations.

Art Club: 1st & 2nd Sessions

Complimentary Quadrants

     Students sketched an animal and worked to fill the page. Then they divided the page into quarters. Each quarter was painted with watercolors a different set of complimentary colors.

Dale Chihuly Style Sculpture

     Students brought plastic bottles to color with permanent markers. Then they cut the bottles into spiral shapes. The bottles will be attached together to create a chandelier reminiscent of Dale Chihuly's glass sculpture works.
